Data sources

Where the figures in Compass come from, how fresh they are, and whose terms apply. Each figure shows when it was updated; hover the time to see its source. Last updated October 1, 2026.

Providers

  • Yahoo Finance (through the open-source yahoo-finance2 library): quotes, price history, company profiles and statistics, analyst estimates and ratings, ownership, options, screeners, trending tickers and headlines. Yahoo is an unofficial source; when it fails, Compass falls back to another provider or shows the last copy, marked stale.
  • SEC EDGAR (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission): financial statements from XBRL filings and the filings themselves (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K and others).
  • Finnhub: quotes when Yahoo is unavailable, company news, the earnings calendar, earnings surprises, analyst recommendations and peer suggestions.
  • FRED (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis): interest rates, inflation, unemployment and volatility series, and the release dates of economic reports. This product uses the FRED® API but is not endorsed or certified by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
  • Federal Reserve Board: the schedule of FOMC meetings.
  • Polymarket: prediction market odds, shown for context only.
  • Tiingo: daily price history when Yahoo is unavailable.
  • Logo.dev: company logos.

Freshness

Quotes can be delayed by 15 minutes or more depending on the exchange; a "delayed" badge says so when the provider reports it. Statements and filings update when companies file. Macro series update when each report is released.

Compass keeps a short-lived copy of each answer so pages load quickly. When every provider fails, the last copy is shown with a "stale" badge and its age.
